Lawmakers grew tired of losing productive citizens to dramatic shootouts, so they criminalized not just the act of dueling, but even suggesting one. If someone insults you in Rhode Island today, you will have to settle it in small claims court instead. Throwing a glove at someone's feet is no longer a legally sound dispute resolution.
